Places to visit

A day on foot in Argleton

Bring walking shoes. The best parts of Argleton are close enough to discover without a timetable.

Argleton Castle

Follow the signed path west from the green for a view over the rooftops and the tree line. The upper passage is closed. Read the castle history.

The Muddy Field

Argleton’s only pub is the place to dry off, ask after a walking route, and hear three versions of the same story before supper. It sits just off the village green.

The old mill and stream walk

A short, mostly level walk follows the water past the mill ruins and returns by the lower field. Allow forty-five minutes and more after heavy rain.

East woodland path

A longer marked route skirts the trees and reaches the old culvert. Keep to the path, especially near the fenced ground and former service works. The forest becomes very dark well before the village streets do.

Parish hall and village green

The hall holds small displays of local photographs, castle drawings and wartime recollections when volunteers are available. Pick up a walking leaflet here.

A practical note

The Muddy Field kitchen usually serves lunch from noon until two and supper from six until eight; Sunday and winter hours are posted at the door. The hall leaflet rack is available during volunteer opening hours. Allow extra time for wet paths and return before dusk.
